IASTM (Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization) uses a titanium tool to break up soft tissue restrictions and improve mobility, commonly used to treat tendinopathy, chronic pain, and limited range of motion.

This technique is utilized by manual therapists to manipulate soft tissue and improve tissue extensibility. The titanium tool is used against the skin in various forces, directions, and patterns based on the purpose of the treatment. At Valor Physical Therapy in Carlsbad, IASTM can be used in conjunction with soft tissue mobilization, active/passive movement, and therapeutic exercises in order to efficiently and effectively improve movement quality and decrease pain. Valentine has been certified in IASTM techniques since 2019 and uses titanium tools (instead of the popular stainless steel tools) to provide the most hygenic and effective tissue changes with less force required. IASTM is a regular part of how we help athletes, including BJJ competitors and endurance athletes training throughout North County San Diego, recover soft tissue restrictions faster.

Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization is typically used for:

  • Chronic neck and back pain
  • Ligament injuries
  • Tendinopathies, including Achilles and patellar tendinopathy
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Limited joint range of motion from scar tissue or old injury
  • IT band syndrome
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome and other repetitive strain conditions
  • Post-surgical scar tissue restrictions

Why we use it

Soft tissue can develop restrictions and adhesions from overuse, past injury, or repetitive movement patterns, and those restrictions often don't resolve on their own. IASTM allows our clinicians to detect those restrictions with more precision than hands alone, then apply targeted pressure to break them up and restore normal tissue movement. Used alongside soft tissue mobilization, active and passive movement, and therapeutic exercise, it speeds up what the body is already trying to do: heal and move well again. For athletes especially, it means faster recovery between training sessions and fewer nagging issues that quietly limit performance.

Why We Use Titanium Instead of Stainless Steel

Most IASTM tools on the market are stainless steel, but Valor Physical Therapy uses titanium instruments instead, for two reasons. Titanium is naturally more hygienic than stainless steel: it's non-porous and resistant to bacterial buildup, which matters in a hands-on clinical setting. Titanium tools also require less force to achieve the same tissue effect, meaning treatment can be just as effective while feeling more comfortable for the patient.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most patients feel pressure or mild discomfort during treatment, particularly over areas with significant restriction, but it shouldn't be sharply painful. Your provider adjusts pressure based on your tolerance and treatment goals.

Some mild redness or bruising can occur, especially in areas with significant tissue restriction. This is a normal part of the treatment process and typically fades within a few days.

This varies by individual and diagnosis. Many patients notice improved mobility after just one or two sessions, though a full course of treatment is often recommended for lasting results.

No. At Valor Physical Therapy, IASTM is one part of a broader treatment plan that includes therapeutic exercise and movement-based care, not a standalone fix.
