Sports Injuries and Athletic Performance

We work with athletes across all sports and competition levels, from youth league players in Carlsbad and Encinitas to competitive adults and weekend warriors throughout North County San Diego.

ACL and Knee Ligament Injuries
ACL tears, PCL injuries, and multi-ligament knee injuries require structured, progressive rehabilitation to return to sport safely. We use objective return-to-play benchmarks including VALD performance testing to ensure you are ready before being cleared.

Rotator Cuff and Throwing Injuries
Overhead athletes including baseball players, swimmers, and volleyball players frequently deal with rotator cuff strains, shoulder impingement, and labral injuries. We offer a dedicated Baseball Mobility Program for throwing athletes.

BJJ and Combat Sports Injuries
We treat a high volume of jiu-jitsu athletes, MMA competitors, and grapplers. Common injuries include shoulder dislocations, knee ligament sprains, neck strains, and rib injuries. Our Resilience in BJJ online course supports injury prevention between sessions.

Running Injuries
IT band syndrome, shin splints, stress fractures, plantar fasciitis, and patellofemoral pain are common in runners. We assess your running mechanics as part of the evaluation and address the biomechanical factors driving your injury.

Return to Sport Rehabilitation
Regardless of your sport, we build a structured return-to-sport plan with clear milestones. We use the Athlete Advantage Program to help athletes not just recover from injury but come back performing better than before.

Vestibular and Neurological Conditions

Dr. Valentine Ngo, PT, DPT is a certified vestibular and concussion rehabilitation specialist with the American Institute of Balance, the world's largest network of neurodiagnostic and rehabilitation balance specialists.

Dizziness and Vertigo (BPPV)
Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo is one of the most common causes of dizziness and is highly treatable with canalith repositioning maneuvers such as the Epley maneuver. Most patients experience significant relief within one to three sessions.

Vestibular Hypofunction
Reduced function in one or both inner ears causes chronic imbalance and visual instability with movement. Vestibular rehabilitation retrains the brain to compensate for the deficit and restores functional stability.

Vestibular Neuritis and Labyrinthitis
Inner ear inflammation following a viral illness can cause sudden, severe dizziness that lingers for weeks or months. Targeted vestibular exercises accelerate recovery significantly compared to rest alone.

Concussion Rehabilitation
We treat both acute concussions (within 3 months) and post-concussion syndrome (symptoms lasting longer than 3 months). Treatment addresses the neck, eyes, and vestibular system, since these are the most commonly disrupted systems after a head injury. Early intervention is associated with faster, more complete recovery.

Balance and Fall Prevention
Our Active and Able Balance Program is designed for adults who are experiencing a decline in balance, increased fall risk, or want to maintain their independence as they age.

Post-Surgical Rehabilitation

We work with patients recovering from a wide range of orthopedic surgeries, building a rehabilitation timeline in coordination with your surgeon's protocol.

Common post-surgical conditions we treat include:

  • ACL reconstruction
  • meniscus debridement or repair, menisectomy
  • rotator cuff repair
  • shoulder or hip arthroscopy
  • knee replacement
  • hip replacement
  • shoulder replacement
  • spinal surgery - laminectomy, fusion, discectomy
  • tendon repair
  • ligament repair
  • nerve relocation

Chronic Pain and General Wellness

We also work with many patients who have experienced years of chronic pain and dysfunction, which requires a thorough evaluation of all symptoms and areas involved. With Direct Access in California, we can work on many areas of the body to better treat these symptoms, not just one body part.

Chronic Pain Management

Patients dealing with persistent pain that has not responded to other treatments often benefit from physical therapy's combination of manual therapy, movement retraining, and progressive loading. We take a whole-person approach to understanding what is sustaining your pain.

Posture and Movement Dysfunction
Poor posture, muscle imbalances, and restricted mobility often contribute to recurring pain. We identify these patterns during your evaluation and address them as part of your treatment plan.

Headaches, Migraines, and TMJ Dysfunction
Cervicogenic headaches (headaches driven by neck dysfunction) and tension headaches respond well to manual physical therapy and exercise. We assess the role of your neck, jaw, and posture in contributing to your headache pattern.

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome is a chronic pain condition that typically develops after an injury, surgery, or nerve trauma, causing pain that is disproportionate to the original injury and often accompanied by changes in skin color, temperature, and swelling. It most commonly affects a limb and can significantly impact daily function and quality of life. Physical therapy is one of the most effective evidence-based treatments for CRPS, and early intervention is strongly associated with better outcomes. At Valor Physical Therapy, we take a graded, patient-paced approach that prioritizes desensitization and gradual restoration of movement without triggering symptom flares.

Neurodegenerative Conditions and Chronic Pain

Physical therapy plays an important role in managing symptoms, maintaining function, and preserving quality of life for patients living with neurodegenerative diagnoses like Parkinson's Disease and Multiple Sclerosis. While physical therapy does not reverse these conditions, it meaningfully slows functional decline, reduces pain, and improves independence.
